2/17/2023 0 Comments Doom 4 all monsters![]() ![]() ![]() Hell, even just a year before Doom's release games like Civilization 2 and the aforementioned Ultima Underworld talked about themes like redemption and world politics. I mean, yeah I just posted this because it showed that reviews were being "sjw" in the era that gators always heralded as a golden age, but yeah. Edge was criticising Doom for essentially being another Wolfenstein 3D mindless-shooter, in an era dominated by Ultima, adventure games, and 4x games that had far more complicated mechanics and stories than Doom. ErrantSignal talked about this better than I could, but Doom was mostly taking already-done mechanics and perfected it. They weren't speculating about the future but comparing Doom to some of its contemporaries, such as Ultima: Underworld, that actually had these game elements. I disagree that this review missed the point of Doom to me, it seems like Edge recognised Doom as a gaming landmark and was speculating upon what might be (and, as it came to pass, actually was) a future gaming landmark.Įer. If we laughed at Edge back in 1994, because the idea of negotiating with a video games' enemies seemed absurd, I don't understand why we're still laughing today. It presupposed games way beyond its years, games like Skyrim, Mass Effect and Undertale wherein the player can indeed talk to the creatures, can indeed form alliances. ![]()
